I drew this image from a photo I took of my parents during a walk on Big Island (which is actually a peninsula), in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. At the edge of a field we discovered a tree stand for hunting deer. The image shows my mom climbing the ladder while my dad watches from the ground.
I’ve always been attracted to tangled forms. As a child I drew mazes, and as a teenager, I drew celtic knots. When I lived in California, I drew tangled highway interchanges. But mostly, I like to draw tangled forms from nature. The forests in Nova Scotia are especially dense and tangled, with trees growing so close together in places that you can’t force your way through. I love these places, I think they have a kind of claustrophobic calm. When I draw these tangles of branches, I’m reminded that there is an order to the mess, but it’s not one that we’ll ever really be able to understand. In my drawings, I seek to find a balance between stylized patterns and the wild chaos of the woods.
