Sketches from Algonquin Park

Algonquin Park is the largest park in Eastern North America, located a few hours west of Ottawa, Ontario. In the summer of 2014 I worked and lived there as the student GIS technician. I spent most of my non-working hours in the woods sketching.

The sketches I made in my first week were disappointing - I was badly out of practice. In the second week, the blackflies arrived. In the third, the mosquitos. I learned to draw quickly!

By the end of the summer, I'd filled my book and vastly improved my skills. I'd also learned a lot about the species and ecosystem I was drawing, an interest that has proven to be life-long.

The book I filled that summer is one of my most prized possessions today.
